Schiphol adds 35 electric buses

19 Jun 2015 by GrahamSmith

Amsterdam Schiphol airport has introduced 35 electric buses to transport passengers from aircraft to gate.

The buses, which are powered at solar-panelled charging stations, have been designed in collaboration with the airport specifically for use at Schiphol.

Additional baggage and seating space has been created by installing a smaller battery tailored for the short distances travelled.

Jos Nijhuis, Schiphol Group CEO and president, said: "Schiphol aims to be one of the most sustainable airports in the world. In everything we do we try to be cleaner, smarter, more economical and more social.

"It's absolutely fantastic that the buses are charged via their own solar panels."

British Airways opened its refurbished lounge at the airport at the end of last year (see news, December 2014).
