Delta Air Lines has completed a $229 million, three-year upgrade at Los Angeles International airport's Terminal 5.

The renovation includes the US carrier's first private check-in lounge, a renovated Sky Club lounge, a renovated Sky Priority lobby, an expanded ticketing lobby and four additional security screening checkpoints.

Premium passengers arriving at the terminal can now enter the building via a curbside entrance into check-in lounge Delta One at LAX. Here, services include a personalised luggage check, a refreshment bar and a dedicated security checkpoint.

Delta's Sky Club lounge now includes 100 extra seats, new shower suites, an updated food area and new furnishings and fixtures.

Delta president Ed Bastian said: "We're fast on our way to becoming the airline of choice in Los Angeles by understanding what moves LA – its most prominent industries, its most desired destinations, and its discerning customers' required amenities for travel.

"Our investments in T5 now offer Angelenos a more premium airport experience, from check-in to take-off."

Delta's Terminal 5 upgrades are part of a more-than $8 billion overhaul of LAX. The airline said its seat capacity in Los Angeles has increased more than 100 per cent since 2009.

Delta is currently trialling a system where passengers' hand luggage is preloaded above their allocated seats before boarding begins (see news, June 4).
