American Airlines has outlined a plan to refurbish all its Admirals Club lounges worldwide.
Calling the programme the "most expansive lounge makeover in the airline's history", the US carrier will debut the new look at Phoenix Sky Harbor and Sao Paulo airports. Both lounges are currently closed for construction.
Work at Admirals Club facilties at New York JFK, LAX, Miami and Dallas Fort Worth will follow this year, then lounges in cities including Chicago and London in the next few years.
The new design will include white glass entryways, modern check-in podiums, communal tables, and high-backed chairs fitted with power outlets and USB ports. Each lounge will have artwork reflecting its location.
Some facilities will be expanded during the refurbishment, such as the Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal A lounge. American also said it plans to "enhance" the food in its Admirals Club lounges this summer.
Fernand Fernandez, American's vice president of global marketing, said: "In the future, when our customers see an Admirals Club sign anywhere in the world, they'll know they'll find a reliable, modern space where they can charge their devices, grab a bite to eat, get caught up on work or unplug from the world around them.
"Our goal is to create spaces that are more in line with how people live and spend their time today."
This summer, American is operating a newly-retrofitted B767-300ER on its Manchester-New York JFK route (see news, March 11).
