Lufthansa's long-haul premium economy has proved a success, the airline's chief commercial officer has told Business Traveller. Speaking at the ITB in Berlin, where the seating was launched last year (see news, March 2014), Jens Bischof said premium economy will be installed across all 105 of its long-haul aircraft by late October. He said: "We are pleased with the performance of premium economy both volume-wise and yield-wise. We think this means our decision to have a completely new seat designed was the right one, and we are seeing great satisfaction scores from those fly it." Bischof added: "By the end of October 2015 it will have been retrofitted to all 105 of our long-haul aircraft, completing a retrofit of all cabins including economy, business and first." Lufthansa says this retrofit programme is the largest and most comprehensive in its history and has cost the airline an average of €1 million per day since 2011 with the total amount invested coming to approximately €1.5 billion. The retrofit has seen around 39,000 seats either replaced, modified or, in the case of new aircraft, fitted on Lufthansa's long-haul aircraft. This breaks down as follows:
  • 600 seats in first class
  • 7,000 seats in business class
  • "More than" 27,600 seats in economy class
Around 3,600 premium economy seats have been/are being fitted on Lufthansa's 105 long-haul aircraft (the seat is currently available on 30 long-haul aircraft). To read a review of Lufthansa's premium economy product, click here. lufthansa.com Tom Otley
