Eurostar to operate Geneva route

2 Oct 2014 by GrahamSmith

Eurostar will launch a year-round route to Geneva via Lille in December.

The new service is in partnership with TGV Lyria, meaning passengers will be able to purchase through-tickets from London to the Swiss city but will transfer onto a TGV Lyria train at Lille.

The four-times weekly route, which starts on December 14, will operate on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are available for booking from October 9.

The outbound London to Geneva service will take six hours and 18 minutes with a 37-minute connection in Lille.

Eurostar will begin a direct service to Lyon and Marseilles in May 2015 (see news, July 18) and to Amsterdam in 2016.

Lille Europe railway station is being refurbished to increase capacity at the Eurostar terminal. The upgrade will be unveiled in December, coinciding with the launch of the new Geneva service.

Nick Mercer, Eurostar's commercial director, said: "Our research shows a real appetite for a more civilised way to reach popular European destinations, and this new connecting service offers easy access for customers looking for a city break in Geneva or to reach some of the most spectacular ski resorts in Europe.

"With city-centre to city-centre travel and a generous baggage allowance, the new offer proposes an attractive alternative to flying."

In July, Eurostar announced it had seen a 6 per cent increase in business travellers in the first half of this year (see news, July 17).
