IHG Rewards changes awards system

11 Jun 2014 by GrahamSmith

IHG Rewards is changing its points awards system.

Members currently earn 2,000 points per stay at an Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts property.

From July 1, they will instead accrue ten points for every dollar spent when booking and also on items charged to the room.

Points will be earned on the nightly room rate; room service; and on food and drink purchases, in-room movies, telephone and laundry services charged to the room.

An IHG Rewards statement said: "Booking the stay alone could earn over 8,000 points. That's four times more rewarding on average. So before you've even stepped through the door, you're earning much more than before.

"Exclusions apply so members are asked to confirm with the hotel at the time of purchase."

From the same date, IHG Rewards members will have free Internet access at all of the brand's 4,700 properties worldwide.

Earlier this year, IHG announced plans to open a Hotel Indigo at London's Barbican in 2016 (see news, March 31).
