Delta Air Lines will launch a direct Chicago to London Heathrow service in October.

The American carrier will deploy a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on the year-round route, which will be its seventh between the US and LHR.

Outbound flight DL040 will take-off from Chicago O'Hare at 1730 and land at LHR at 0735 the following day.

The return service, DL039, will depart Heathrow at 0930 and arrive in Chicago at 1245 local time, reports airlineroute.net.

Last month, Delta announced it will carry out a £425 million ($770 million) refurbishment of its B757-200, B737-800, A319 and A320 aircraft over the next three years (see news, January 9).

That's an odd choice for Delta.

Virgin, BA, American, and United already fly this route, so you'd think the market would be saturated by now. Also, while these competitors all have hubs at one end or the other, Delta offers fairly limited connections at O'Hare (only to their domestic US hubs, which except for Cincinnati all have non-stop service to LHR).

I suppose this could be related to their JV with Virgin, but in that case why wouldn't Virgin just add capacity with its own metal?
