Austrian returns to Tehran

Austrian Airlines will restart flights to Tehran on March 11, just over one year since it suspended services owing to economic sanctions and currency fluctuations.
The Vienna-based airline will fly five times weekly to the Iranian capital using an A319. Convenient connections will be provided from other European cities.
The move is good news for business travellers because few western carriers serve Iran, resulting in a shortage of quality direct flight options from Europe.
Flights are now available for booking on the carrier's website. OS871 departs Vienna at 2010, arriving at Tehran at 0300 the next morning. Return service OS872 will leave Tehran at 0355 to provide an arrival into Vienna at 0600.
With regards to connections from Heathrow, it's a mixed picture until March 30 when Austrian boosts its London service to four flights daily (see news, January 14).
So, from March 11, the outward flight to Vienna will involve a long layover. OS451 departs at 0905 from Heathrow landing into Vienna at 1220. On the other hand, the return service provides a quick connection as OS451 leaves Vienna at 0640 and lands back into Heathrow at 0750.
From March 30, new flight OS462 will depart Heathrow at 1520 and with an 1855 arrival into Vienna there will be a good connection. So too will the retimed (the summer schedules start at the end of March) OS451, which will leave Vienna at 0700 to give an arrival into Heathrow at 0825.

This route has successfully generated revenue for Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines for many years. It will only be a matter of time until BA and KLM restart flights to Tehran.
