14 Jan 2014 by GrahamSmith

Ryanair is opening two Greece bases in Athens and Thessaloniki from where it will launch nine new routes.

As part of a $280 million investment, the budget carrier will base two aircraft in Athens and one in Thessaloniki from April.

Its Athens base will operate 154 weekly flights and serve six new routes — to Chania, London, Milan, Paphos, Rhodes & Thessaloniki.

The Thessaloniki base will operate 212 weekly flights, including on three new routes to Athens, Pisa & Warsaw. All nine new routes will begin on April 1.

David O'Brien, the airline's director of commercial, said: "Ryanair is delighted to announce Athens and Thessaloniki as our second and third bases in Greece in addition to Chania."

Last month, Ryanair announced that it will launch a new service between Manchester and Bologna in April (see news, December 24).
