W Milan is scheduled to open on May 1 next year, marking the upscale brand's first entry in Italy.
The 76-room hotel will be located in the city's Brera district, home to prestigious art collections and steps from the famous Duomo and La Scala opera house.
Alessandro Pinna, Milan Area Marketing Director for Starwood Hotels, said: "Milan is the city of fashion and design and so it's a hotel people are expecting."
The project, due to be finalised in May 2009, was stalled during the financial crisis but is now preparing to launch next summer.
"The Milanese are excited, especially after the opening of W Barcelona as people can touch with their hands the W brand," he added.
Earlier this year Starwood officially opened the three-floor Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport Hotel & Conference Centre (click here).
The linear-looking hotel, which directly connects with the airport, contains 433 rooms, 30 meeting and conference rooms and 200sqm club lounge.
Starwood recently announced a fourth property for Dubai, located in the centre of the city on Sheikh Zayed Road (click here).
Susanne Barfoed, Vice President Brand Management Sheraton, Westin and Speciality Select Brands, said: "The existing properties are in three different locations, so we're optimistic about Sheraton - it's really a brand that travels well."
