Swiss introduces new baggage rules

SWISS is extending its 'piece concept' as part of a new drive to standardise global baggage regulations.
Alreadly applicable on North Atlantic flights, the new regulations will apply to all tickets bought on or after August 1, while carry-on rules remain unchanged.
The system allows passengers to check in a certain number of pieces of baggage free of charge, with the number of pieces permitted depending on their class of travel.
Business class passengers can check in two pieces up to 32kgs each and maximum total of 64kgs, First Class passengers can check in three pieces up to 32kgs each and those flying Economy are allowed one piece up to 23kgs. All pieces in all three classes must not exceed total dimensions (length plus width plus height) of 158cms.
Miles & More members may also be entitled to higher free-baggage allowances than the above, depending on their programme status.
The airline claims for many passengers travelling on SWISS services within Europe and on long-haul flights to Asia or Africa, the new concept will increase their free baggage allowance.
Martin Massüger, Director, Head of Sales Middle East, Africa, Pakistan & Iran for SWISS, said it hoped the extension would help address baggage concerns more efficiently.
The previous per-kilo system, which often resulted in high excess baggage charges, has been abolished, in favour of just two per-piece rates, 'Europe' and 'intercontinental'. Each additional piece of baggage (up to 23 kilos) will cost CHF90 per sector on European services or CHF225 per sector on intercontinental flights.
Fellow European carrier Austrian Airlines recently simplified its baggage rules too, providing executives flying business class two more kilos per bag (click here).

BA have a much nicer system for status passengers in economy, you get one extra piece and the 23kg limit is raised to 32kg.
It's really annoying from lufthansa and now swiss to know you can have 2x 23kg in economy but will be charged for 1x 27kg, even though you have a senator card.
