Qantas pilots to make "unauthorised" announcements

The Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) has given Qantas management notice today that it will start unauthorised in-flight announcements on long-haul flights to raise public awareness of its industrial action and shifting of operations to Asia.
An AIPA stament stressed the announcements will be "brief and positive."
Speaking today near the site of a new billboard in Neutral Bay, Sydney, AIPA spokesman and Qantas pilot Nathan Safe said the initial industrial actions by pilots would not disrupt passengers.
"We know that the biggest wake-up call we can send the current management team is to blow the whistle on their plans to strip a proud Australian icon down to its bare bones and shift operations to Asia," he said.
"When Australians board a Qantas flight, they expect a Qantas pilot at the controls. AIPA’s initial campaign is going to focus purely on raising awareness of the fact that this very basic expectation is under threat."
AIPA has also announced the launch of a new campaign website, qantaspilots.com.au, aimed at explaining why Qantas pilots are taking industrial action for the first time in 45 years.
The site will feature interactive FAQs and a variety of ways the public can get involved in the campaign to keep Qantas pilots at Qantas.
AIPA has also launched a national billboard campaign as part of the awareness building effort. The billboards, featuring the message ‘When you board a Qantas flight, you expect a Qantas pilot’, have sprung up in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
