Oman Air starts Zurich services

Oman Air has started flights between Muscat and Zurich, its sixth European destination.

Speaking exclusively to Business Traveller Middle East, Abdulrazaq Alraisi, Chief Commercial Officer, said the route is served by one of the airline's A330-200s four times a week.

"We thought four would be sufficient to start with and we'll build the traffic accordingly," he said.

The carrier, which operates 26 aircraft, adopted a similar strategy when it first flew to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

Quoted online fares for travel this week are OMR196.200.

In contrast to Emirates, which hubs passengers through Dubai from east and west, Oman Air is focused on building point-to-point traffic.

The airline was one of the pioneers with on-air connectivity with its A330s - latterly Gulf Air has joined the fray - although the service is not available on the B737-800s operating on its shorter routes (from Dubai this morning, for example).

"We're evaluating such options," he added. "The trend from now on, for whichever aircraft, regardless of the timeframe, is you always want to be connected."

The airline has codeshare agreements with bmi and Malaysia Airlines, providing broader network reach. "Definitely that's not the end of it - we're looking to expand, in order to expand our network," he said.

Alongside recently announced orders for six B787 Dreamliners, a third Embraer will join the fleet next March for operation on Salalah and Gulf routes.
