Millennium & Copthorne plans to open properties in Basra and Baghdad within the next six months as part of a concerted push into Iraq.
Speaking to Business Traveller Middle East at Arabian Travel Market, Ali Lakhraim, President & CEO Middle East & North Africa, said: “Basra will be very important because of the oil industry. Its oil reserves are amongst the largest in the world.”
It took over a former Sheraton hotel in Erbil four months ago, which is in the midst of a $12m rebrand, and aims to open three new builds in Suleimaniya in the Kurdistan region.
The company currently operates 12 properties in the MENA region, with 40 signed projects in the pipeline.
“The regional unrest has impacted growth in certain areas, such as Libya and Egypt, but overall the Middle East remains promising,” he said.
Four more hotels are earmarked for Qatar and it recently announced plans to bring the first Biltmore hotel to Abu Dhabi.
“We will be announcing a Biltmore in Dubai too, within a maximum two years,” he said.
