Work on the new terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, KLIA2, is progressing with construction due to be finished by October next year and operations starting April 2013.
Delegates were given an update on the project, which will have a passenger capacity of 45 million, at the first Emerging Markets Airport Suppliers Conference in Dubai this week.
One of the distinctive features is an iconic 'skybridge', along the lines of Denver, where planes can taxi underneath and passengers walk through above.
Dato' lr. Abdul Nasir Abdul Razak, General Manager, Planning & Development, Malaysia Airport Holdings, said: "We want to integrate low-cost carrier and legacy carrier traffic so everything will be connected above or underground."
The project, with a gross floor area spanning 257,000sqm, contains a large emphasis on retail, with 55,000sqm-worth of shops.
"We believe south-east Asia is a huge untapped hinterland, next to China and India," added Abdul Razak. "When you consider there are 450 milion people in Indonesia and only around 3% are currently flying, you can see the potential."
While he acknowledged the region has a plethora of hubs, in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore, he welcomed the competition.
Alongside Kuala Lumpur, investment is being channelled into Kota Kinabulu, Kuching and Langkawi, collectively amounting to $10 billion by 2056.
