Dubai 'passed 50 million passengers' in 2011

Dubai International Airport has handled more than 50 million passengers this year.
Speaking at the opening of the first annual Emerging Markets Airport Suppliers Conference & Exhibition in Dubai this morning, HE Khalifa Suhail Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai World Central - Dubai Aviation City Corporation, said: "I am told that, by the end of October, the airport handled 50 million passengers."
It means the Middle East's leading airport could now eclipse the projected total of 51 million passengers in 2011.
He said the ongoing expansion of Emirates and Flydubai means the airport "cannot build fast enough to accommodate such growth".
"The addition of A380s, B787s and prevalance of low-cost carriers are fast changing the demands on our business," he added.
Despite the precarious global economic climate, he said the Middle East's aviation sector remains in good health.
"There's no state which isn't building a new airport or expanding an existing one. Aviation is one sector that hasn't really been affected by the downturn."
