Boeing tips 737 Max in 2012

Jim Albaugh, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, is tipping the 737 MAX as its model to watch this year.

To date, the planemaker has secured 1,000 orders and commitments from 15 airlines.

"The 737 MAX, with its unmatched efficiency, will be a key part of our customers' future fleet needs. As our current commitments become firm orders and we add even more customers, I have no doubt that 2012 will be the 'Year of the 737 MAX'," he said.

Boeing confirmed Southwest Airlines as its launch 737 Max customer in December (click here). The US low-cost carrier has ordered 150 of the new-engine model, with the first delivery scheduled for 2017.

Boeing claims airlines will benefit from a 7% advantage in operating costs over future competing models.

The aircraft will compete with Airbus' forthcoming A320 Neo airplane, which has secured 1,420 orders in less than a year after launch. Qatar Airways ordered 50 at the Dubai Airshow (click here).

Albaugh said another key goal in 2012 is to ensure that its B787 production is "stable and reliable", as it aims to produce 10 planes a month - a significant increase on the current 2.5 a month.

It plans to increase production of its B737s to 38 airplanes per month (35 per month rate begins this month), and raise its B777 quote to 8.3 airplanes per month (currently seven per month).

In December, Boeing delivered its 7,000th B737 to flydubai.
