Personally think, airline makes money when they act a a feeder. The reason EY, EK and QR do so is simply cos they offer more route from their respective Hun to the East than BA, not to mention their price is very competitive,

Air France-KLM to restructure short and medium-haul network

Before that, they should first restructure their cabin layout (9 instead of 10 in economy) and revamp their business class seat and stingy FlyingBlue program. Also, Let KLM handles costumer service, since AF is really bad at it.
