The news article by Business Traveller states "British Airways has cut fares for departures from London Gatwick airport by up to 20 per cent...". The "by up to" are key words here. Gatwick to Jersey return in Club class starts at £247 return....

Keep the transit time in the UK to less than 24 hours. This avoids the UK departure tax becoming appliable and BA's own fare recalculation treating the change of plane as a stopover.

Care needs to be taken when comparing real taxes, on different tickets. For example the UK APD does not apply to through tickets where the journey starts outside of the UK and the connection at the UK airport is made within 24 hours of arrival.
