A number of EU countries now insist by law that Winter Tyres must be fitted if driving in their countries during certain dates. Fines can be up to €140 and there can be insurance problems in the event of an accident.

I don’t think WInter tyres are that big an issue as they are not banned anywhere as far as I know. More problematic is the need for studded tyres and chains which are necesssary in some conditions and illegal in others.

My hire car from Hertz at Schipol on Tuesday had winter tyres already and they were changing all the fleet by the middle of October.
