What do the majority do when needing to use flight connections in T5. Last time, admittedly it was peak time (4pm) in the terminal, I exited, then went back in via the First wing, took all of 5 minutes. Has there been any improvement at the top of the escalator (flight connections) or is it still hit and miss?

Flight connections or exit and back in via the First wing?

No change there at T5,if your luggage already transfered or you have hand luggage only and time and Uk visa use the First wing and get some freedom from airside.
Smokers can get out of the building too!

Agree with above. Quick exit through the e-passport gates and up the lift to first wing. Way faster than the alternatives

It was often a better option even before the First Wing opened, so agree it will be far better now.

I did this again this morning, arriving on a flight from CPH and connecting to MAN.

Flight connections was rammed, so out through an e-gate (no waiting) up into departures and through the First Wing, again with no waiting.

From deplaning to sitting in the First lounge took about 10 minutes.
