Alex McWhirterParticipantStarting this summer economy/premium economy passengers will have better catering but only if they pay a fee.
Lufthansa is copying a service which a number of other European airlines already offer on long-haul routes.
More details are awaited.

SwissExPatParticipantSwiss have offered this for over a year.
The quality of the food I found to be excellent (essentially a business class meal) and the service was before all others in Y.

Alex McWhirterParticipantThanks SwissExPat.
Austrian Airlines also has something similiar but on shorter routes I believe.
Lufthansa has posted more information and this time it’s in English language.

capetonianmParticipantExcellent idea. Basic meal is ‘free’ (if there is such a thing) and a better product is chargeable. KLM also do this, why not more carriers? The only thing that may be a slight concern is that you may order in advance and then on the day you change your mind.

Alex McWhirterParticipantAlso when there is disruption and flights are missed (late running connex) and/or cancelled.
Air France has been offering something similar for some time already. In fact according to the publicity blurb there is quite a choice including a “My Fun Menu” from April 1 (given the date is that serious ?)

canuckladParticipantWell I’m going to go against the grain here. I just see this as airline following the bad example of their competitors.
If they can get away with it, why can’t we…….It reeks of blackmail !!And what a cheek, especially if you’re paying to fly in premium economy.
It pretty much is the airlines saying that the slop they tray up in front of us is inedible, heartburn inducing swill !
They already have in place , a process for pre-ordering special meals. Can’t they just add another choice to that drop down ….= Edible Food=
Lufthansa are quoting meals starting at £19. Value for money, restaurant quality food , I doubt it ! And I wonder if you get a discount on your fare (sorry for the pun) because they don’t need to supply you with a standard meal.
Why not just take your own meal on board…..cheaper and definitely tastier !!
