For those of you who haven’t read the BBC’s article from earlier this week, which are the only two countries in the world (according to the CIA World Factbook, the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World and the US Department of State) to officially start with the word “The”?

    Because googling would be cheating:

    The Lebanon
    The Gambia

    How did I do…?

One out of two VintageKrug – The Gambia is correct (there is also an official long form of the name which is The Republic of the Gambia).

Lebanon is “habitually referred to with ‘The'”, but it’s not officially correct, apparently.

Well, it’s all to play for now.

    I’m off for a well earned G&T.

Is it a European country which often goes under another name?

    Why is it “The Wirral”?

Sorry JamesMoloney5, apparently it’s just ‘Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’.

If you mean The Netherlands / Holland Tete_de_cuvee, its officially ‘Kingdom of The Netherlands’ apparently.

    The Bahamas? my vote
The Netherlands? the other half’s vote

Well done papillion53 – The Bahamas is the correct answer. This is the official short name for the country, although it apparently also has an official long name which is ‘Commonwealth of The Bahamas’.

So there we go – have a nice weekend everyone.

    Interesting, thanks and ditto.

I was thinking of the Netherlands.

    Is The Philipines just Philipines?
