I just came across this news item:

The story is still unfolding, but does anyone else remember any past attempts at arson on board? Sounds incredible to me.

The only one I can recall is the shoe bomber, in 2001. He’s back on the news now thanks to some new intel supposedly targeting foreign flights to the US!

Yes I recall that too. But that was an attempt to blow up the plane as opposed to simple arson, if one can call it that. I don’t recall hearing of any such attempt in the past and am interested in knowing whether this is the first such case.
