WHAT'S ON AROUND THE WORLD

Uncovering the best events in September

Sport

PARALYMPIC GAMES
BEIJING, CHINA September 6-17

Check out some less well-known sporting greats. Britain will compete in 18 of the 20 sports, including rowing, which makes its Paralympic debut in Beijing. Can Brit swimmer Dave Roberts get his eighth gold medal? Visit paralympics.org.uk.

Wine

RHEINGAU WINE FESTIVAL
FRANKFURT, GERMANY. Until Sept 12

Winemakers from the Rheingau, the region north of the Rhine river near Frankfurt, bring their wares to the Fressgasse. With more than 600 different wines, it’s an opportunity to try out some new vintages and savour some old favourites. Visit frankfurt-tourismus.de.

Music

WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL
CHICAGO, USA. September 19-25

The tenth renewal of this musical extravaganza will get your toes tapping. The multi-venue, one-week festival attracts around 45,000 visitors a year, and showcases traditional and contemporary music from cultures across the world. Visit cityofchicago.org/worldmusic.

Film

PORTOBELLO FILM FESTIVAL
LONDON, UK

The Portobello Film Festival is on until September 14, with what promises to be an inspiring set of films by up-and-coming artists. Visit portobellofilmfestival.com.

BOSTON FILM FESTIVAL
BOSTON, USA

Check out the 24th Boston Film Festival (September 12-18). A ten-day programme of shorts, documentaries and feature films is sure to satisfy any film-lover. Visit bostonfilmfestival.org.

Arts

PABLO PICASSO
NEW YORK, USA. Until November 3

A new focus exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), on until November 3, features sculptures by Pablo Picasso, an exhibition of radical, thought-changing works in cast bronze, plaster and other materiels. The artist turned to sculpture at key moments in his career, using the medium as a testing ground for ideas. The sculpture Woman’s Head (Fernande) (1909) helped Picasso conceptualise the breaking of solid volume into shifting masses, and is a good example of early Cubism. Visit moma.org/exhibitions.

Culture

WHITE NIGHTS

MADRID; SPAIN; DUBLIN; IRELAND

Named after the northern midnight sun, White Nights are spreading. Noche en Blanco in Madrid is an all-night cultural extravaganza on September 13. Dublin Culture Night, on September 19, sees over 100 museums, galleries, theatres and more open their doors late into the night for free. Visit esmadrid.com, culturenight.ie.

GANESH CHATURTHI
MUMBAI, INDIA

During September you can’t help but notice the friendly face of Ganesh all over Mumbai. With his ample paunch and elephant head, he is the picture of wealth and happiness. Maharashtrians build huge statues of him out of papier mâché, then on the day of the Chaturthi, thousands of processions converge on the beaches of Mumbai to immerse holy idols in the sea, accompanied by drumming, devotional songs and dancing. Visit incredibleindia.org.
