MARCO SIMONE GOLF CLUB


Where is it? 20 miles north-east.
What's it like? Designed by Jim Fazio and host to the Italian Open in 1993, this is an excellent course, not particularly long but challenging (the second course is ideal for a relaxing round). Picturesque, with fairways and greens framed by Roman ruins salvaged at the time of excavation. There's a 15th century castle and 11th century tower which is now part of the Club House. Marvellously landscaped with Mediterranean pines, shrubs and numerous flowering trees.

CASTELGANDOLFO


Where is it? 20 miles south of Rome past Ciampino airport.
What's it like? This Robert Trent Jones-designed course is laid out with
in an extinct volcano next to Castelgandolfo, best known as the  Pope's summer residence. It plays long: 5,855 metres from the men's tees (and 6,205 metres from the Championship, white tees ) through a landscape of olive and pine trees. There are water hazards from several lakes dotted around the course, and fine views from the Club House which is a restored former 17th century villa.

CIRCOLO DEL GOLF ROMA (AQUASANTA)


Where is it? 10 miles south
What's it like? The oldest course in Italy and fairly short (5,400 metres), located
near the ancient Roman street of Appia Antica. There are excellent views over the Roman Aquaduct which used to bring fresh water to the city of Rome.

OLGIATA GOLF CLUB


Where is it? 15 miles north-west.
What's it like? Olgiata Golf Club was designed by the American player Charles Kenneth Cotton in 1961. Once the site of the ancient Etruscan village Veio and later the stately manor of the noble Corsini family, the course today features one 18-hole course and one nine-hole course. Its setting in the Appenine hills has helped it become one of the most memorable courses in Italy.

PARCO DE'MEDICI

Where is it? 15 miles south close to Fiumicino airport
What's it like? There are two courses at  Parco de'Medici: an 18-hole and a nine-hole. Both are laid out over Pope Leon X's former hunting estate of the 15th century. Designed by David Mezzacane and Peter Fazio, like most of the courses south of Rome the courses are flat, but since opening in 1990 have gained more character. There's a choice of several hotels (including a Sheraton and a Holiday Inn) to stay at nearby.
