CW to LHR to HKG 28 nov to 2 dec.....£5800!!! BA25 and 26

c,mon, I must be doing something wrong on the booking. that is rediculous

LuganoPirate - 15/11/2011 07:29 GMT

Something must be happening in HKG around that time. I've promised the kids a visit to HKG and all the flights are either full or very expensive.

Bucksnet - 15/11/2011 07:40 GMT

Virgin is over 6 grand and CX has no business availability at all. BA and CX have no first. Looks like a busy time.

VintageKrug - 15/11/2011 07:45 GMT

Yes, it's the outbound on the 28th which is the issue.

You can fly exIstanbul on 29th for £1,687 r/t in Club, back on 3rd but more convenient (if exEU is ever convenient...) is exMilan Linate at £1,928.

Seems to one of those situations when varying your plans by even one day could save thousands.

Use the low price finder for the least expensive exLON fare:

Bucksnet - 15/11/2011 07:50 GMT

BA are now using the new booking screen layout they've been using on short haul flights for a while now, and it's the return on the 2nd that is the expensive part. Easy to see cheaper days.

FlyingChinaman - 15/11/2011 08:09 GMT

There are a lot of major events in HKG at the end of this month and seats on direct flights are tight and expensive. The rate you got quoted on BA is probably the full IATA published fare.

Hotel rates are high too during these periods.

Take a indirect and longer route you might be able to find the seats and cheaper and sometimes quite comfortable.

first_class_please - 15/11/2011 08:39 GMT

Try emirates, out business back first £3,500.

stevescoots - 15/11/2011 09:48 GMT

qatar 1650....

DisgustedofSwieqi - 15/11/2011 09:51 GMT

no brainer

MartynSinclair - 15/11/2011 09:54 GMT

It was through BT forum that I started ex-Europe in Milan. Now due to a posting 7.45am today, do I read that Instanbul offers an even better saving??

Bucksnet - 15/11/2011 09:57 GMT

IST is a very long way to do the Euro shuffle. Over 8 hours before you 'start' your intended journey.

DisgustedofSwieqi - 15/11/2011 10:04 GMT

Agree Bucksnet

BA (ex IST) £1,687

QR (ex London) £1,650

One would have to have a strong motivation not to choose QR, IMHO.

Bucksnet - 15/11/2011 10:07 GMT

Going via the middle east to get to HKG is nearly 20% longer and adds hours to the journey, but well worth the savings.

MartynSinclair - 15/11/2011 10:14 GMT

Agreed, would only do IST if time was not an issue.

DisgustedofSwieqi - 15/11/2011 10:37 GMT

Jut out of interest, from the Great Circle Mapper site

LHR-HKG - 5,995 miles

LHR-DOH-HKG - 7,178 miles

IST-LHR-HKG - 7,559 miles

So about 800 miles, 2 hours, longer using IST over DOH, but as Bucksnet says quite rightly, both significantly longer than direct.

Has anyon elooked at Finnair, LHR-HEL-HKG is only 6,011 miles.

RichHI1 - 15/11/2011 10:40 GMT

Finnair do UKL3554 or 2629 if you come back Thurs or Sunday and One World so miles count... Drawback for me is A343 though not a prob if you like airbuses...

LuganoPirate - 15/11/2011 11:02 GMT

Seeing the price difference I would not hesitate to fly Qatar on this route. In general I like direct flights especially long haul overnighters, but for a £4000 saving for a couple of extra hours each way more than justifies it. That's like being paid a £1000 an hour!

BeckyBoop - 15/11/2011 11:25 GMT

Steve I found these on ebookers flying in business on the dates you gave.

Thai £2,437.22
Emirates £2,478.61
Qatar £2,653.33

All of these involve 1 stop and probably all restricted, good luck sweet :) xx

Bucksnet - 15/11/2011 11:39 GMT

Disgusted, you have to get to IST first. So: -

LHR-IST-LHR-HKG = 9,125 miles. More than 2 hours longer than LHR-DOH-HKG.

Amsterdam shuffle is LHR-AMS-LHR-HKG = 6,456 miles

LeTigre - 15/11/2011 12:37 GMT

Just make sure that if you fly QR via DOH that you end up on the 77W as much as possible- the business product is far superior to the A333, as the 77W seat is fully flat not angled. Also, the 77W is just so much more comfortable as it generally has a nice new feeling about it, and is less likely to be showing signs of wear and tear.
