    Hi,

I am currently conducting a survey as part of my final year research project at university. My research project aims to understand the role of virtual meeting technologies in today’s business world and how they are perceived by business travellers. This survey is strictly for academic purposes and personal data will not be exposed, the survey does not ask for any private or sensitive data and should only take about 5 minutes to complete.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Thank you for this.
If Tony doesn’t reply for 24 hours, it’s because he can’t – the forum software only allows one post after initial registration.

Completed – a subject that I am happy to comment on as I dislike virtual meetings and teleconference with a passion. Never has more money been spent on such a waste of time technology. Business is done in person , face to face never on a screen. It’s like salesman who sends email quotes and expect to win business.

    RANT OVER 🙂

I tend to agree Charles, but as a board member of an American university I sometimes feel I could participate just as well by Skype for the three hour meeting rather than spend seventy hours traveling and a fortune on air fares and hotels.

‘LuganoPirate’ – I understand your frustration and yes that is an example of a meeting that might well be better on line. What links to this is a decision I made earlier last year to look at all the meetings I was being invited to and to ask the question,
“Do I need to be there ?” It’s surprising how many times I have been able to say no and simply read the notes afterwards.

A interesting topic and one of which I’m involved in significantly working in IT and have experience in many different areas.

It has had a big impact in the business I work for and its used several times a day across all our locations.
One of the benefits is improving the multi-location team working and being able to have meetings where it is definitely not economical for people to travel.

However, I firmly believe that face to face is still very important and cant be regarded in the same form.

I had this discussion last year during a project management course about the behavior of people in different situations and what we were discussing was the exact situation like the George Clooney Film “Up int he Air” which I’m sure a lot of you may have watched. Not only because the love of travel, chasing air miles and the similarity you may see in yourselves as frequent travelers but how some meetings just have to be done face to face…

In slight disagreement with you CP & LP

One of the questions asked on the survey related to how businesses view this technology. I answered I think that companies see it as a replacement to travel. This has to do with the continual promotion of our facilities through our in house Intranet site. Reducing travel & carbon costs always being cited as reasons to opt for an alternative.
Across the company, we have a couple of very sophisticated and realistic virtual rooms that are spookily realistic. When the technology works!!

Yet, there are still people in my organization (they control their own travel authorization) that will think nothing off hoping on the EDI/LHR shuttle to attend a single meeting in either London or Scotland. Is there an actual need for them to be there in person, or are they on an ego trip, or are they chasing BA status?

To me this technology, should compliment the communication within an organization, not replace the need for travel, but with the caveat that travel, particularly air travel should be linked to the question…. What is this person bringing to the table ?

And if I was in charge I would be refusing travel by air, if the person was only attending 1 meeting, unless it was a full day , or the message was of such sensitivity that F2F was the appropriate way to communicate it.
