The new East Coast franchise (which takes over from the current goverment-owned DOR) takes effect from Sunday.

But the first official train launch by Virgin Trains East Coast will be the 11.00hrs Kings X to Edinburgh service on Monday March 2.

The new MD has pledged to do better than previous operators of this franchise.

Let’s see if Virgin Trains can succeed with its new franchise, where others (with the exception of DOR-operated East Coast) have failed.

Not the best start with East Coast rewards being axed and replaced by Nectar points which offer limited value.

A sad day for us rail travellers, and a day of celebration for political dogma.

Yes, a shame about East Coast. Good reward programme, very good pricing on 1st if you booked in advance together with complimentary catering. I have not seen any reference to cost of catering in the e-mails I have received from virgin east coast and I have also heard that on the west coast route the discounted fares are not as good and as for their reward scheme based on nectar points…..

Virgin East Coast began operations today. But the official launch will be tomorrow when the first full train in Virgin colours will operate the 11.00hrs out of Kings X.

Some trains today are carrying a temporary Virgin logo on the driving cars.
