social_roverParticipantI recently booked a flight on Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 in business and paid the extra 500 euros to fly on this aircraft from Madrid to Istanbul. When I arrived in the airport I was surprised and disappointed because they had changed the plane to a A321.
The product was decent, better than any short-medium haul flight in europe and the service was also excellent, but it was definitely not the same lie flat seats as their A330.
Has this happened to any one? I understand that these things happen sometimes, but i believe they should compensate in some way.

AlexthegreatParticipantThis was a regular occurence with TK on their morning flight IST/KBP/IST (which to be honest was crazy to operate a widebody for a 1hr 50min sector). I dont believe there is any form of compensation unless you paid a premium charge above the normal fare to fly on the A330. SQ used to do this if you flew (first/business) on their A380 instead of their B744/773.

MartynSinclairParticipantThere is a wide body Iberia flight Madrid to London with flat seats (once a day) but you cant guarantee that it will always be used.
I believe airlines use wide bodies for short haul for crew training..
One poster who was expecting a full flat seat on a mid haul flight, was so disgusted when the aircraft was changed to a short haul aircraft that he got off and complained… From memory, he was re routed on an appropriate seat!!

Consider yourself lucky that TK didn’t cancel the flight completely and/or retime it. TK has an issue, particularly at this time of the year, with its scheduling and the number of times that they’ve altered flight times is legion.

IstanbulWarriorParticipantOn TK. it is usually an exception to find a wide-body used on a short haul flight. I usually book all short haul flights expecting a narrow-body, then allowing myself to be pleasantly surprised if they upgrade the aircraft.

I think you may mean me, Martyn; quite right, it was a Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Dubai a couple years ago and they down gauged to a 737-800 with NEK seats.
Three of us made it very clear we wanted to travel on the flat beds we’d paid for and were transferred to Emirates 90 mins later.

MrDarwinParticipantIt’s a question I’ve thought about recently actually. There are so many variations to products these days and often airlines charge a ‘premium’ to fly on newer aircraft or aircraft with newer product. The a380 springs to mind. However if an aircraft changes either well in advance or closer to the date there seems to be no recourse for the additional premium paid (correct me if I’m wrong here).
It’s such a grey area because airlines don’t guarantee aircraft or product types for obvious reasons which is all covered in the T&Cs, however airlines happily apply higher fares for certain aircraft expected to operate certain flights and provide no refund or compensation for ‘downgrades’ to lower quality products. I’m no lawyer but something doesn’t seem right about that…
