FrequentTravellerParticipantRecently there have been a lot of changes to the British Airways hold baggage and advance seat allocation policies. Many of those changes have received a negative reception with travellers. But here is a piece of good news which has just come to my attention. Other people may have missed it too.
Go to http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagunacc/public/en_gb#
Click on “Items that are heavier than 23kgs”
Scroll down to the end of the page and see:
”
The following customers are entitled to a 32kg baggage allowance per bag at no additional charge:
Customers travelling to and from Brazil.
Gold and Silver Executive Club members.
First, Club World and Club Europe customers on all routes.
“Before 7th October 2009 there was always a charge for bags 23kg to 32kg. If you match the above criteria then that charge is removed for all but non-EC high tier members travelling economy.

WilliamReadParticipantThanks for the useful information. From BA’s point of view, what is the point of hiding this consderable benefit in the dark recesses of a website? Surely it should be publicised to its potential and actual passengers?

continentalclubParticipantIt makes a certain amount of sense to make this a slightly low-key policy. Clearly, every kg of extra load equates to increased fuel burn.
I imagine that they view it as a retention policy rather than necessarily a conquest one. If it keeps their frequent and premium passengers happy on the occasions when they need it then it’s commercial – especially if (even unknowingly to the passenger) it avoids a charge at the desk. If it helps maintain corporate deals negotiated with buyers, rather than the passenger him/herself, then it’s commercial.
Would the extra baggage allowance make all that much difference in attracting individual passengers, who are likely already either very brand-loyal or else price sensitive, away from other carriers? I’m guessing not.
However, for the few user-choosers who are concerned about luggage allowances, then the information is on the web if they look.
So, it’s probably the way that I would personally communicate it too, and it is another one of those things that BA does give you that some other carriers don’t.
Interestingly, and I didn’t know this until I read it, but The Sunday Telegraph reports that BA is the only (UK, I assume) airline which applies the maximum DfT hand luggage dimensions too:

Expat_ConsultantParticipantThe article quoted says “But, with the exception of British Airways, most airlines stipulate smaller sizes.”
I wouldn’t take a journalist seriously, if s/he is capable of writing such an illogical sentence.
How much confidence can we have in the underpinning ‘research?’
One also wonders what happened to the editing process 🙁
