SergeantMajorParticipantAfter years of procrastination, Tony Abbott has cut through the inertia and taken the bold step of approving a second airport for Sydney at Badgerys Creek, in Sydney’s West:
Good to see that with the right political leadership, and proper vision, such proposals can get the backing they need.

SimonS1ParticipantSo 28 years after the site was first identified and proposed the decision has finally been made. However planning has not started yet and it will be the mid 2020s at the earliest before we see any flights.
Still 40 years is positively lightning pace compared to the UK.

superchrisParticipantalthough in a country where is costs £8 for a pint of beer, I dread to think what kind of airport £1.4BN builds you.

JohnHarperParticipantUnless Kingsford Smith is closed this will be as popular as Milan Malpensa.

Westlake501ParticipantI tend to agree that this approval might not lead to anything actually being built as it is subject to planning.
Wasn’t Cublington approved as the new London airport and then nothing happened as Maplin Sands was then preferred approved location before being dropped in the early seventies? Likewise the short haul third runway at Heathrow was approved by the Labour government and then cancelled by the coalition.
I appreciate that the UK and Australia are different countries but we share similar political and legal systems as well as having active and noisy NIMBYs.

canuckladParticipantThis is being cited as Sydney’s 2nd airport, am I two weeks late ?
They must then surely name it Paul Hogan International Airport as its location seems to be perfect for a good ol’ fashioned walkabout.Never mind Malpensa, I think you’ll find its more like what Prestwick is to Glasgow or indeed Abbotsford is to Vancouver.
The only airline I can see operating out of there would probably be called Fair Dinkum Ailines flying to Walkabout Creek serving a nice variety of Bush Tucker.

libertyscottParticipantIt will get cargo, both international and domestic, because Kingsford Smith is curfewed, and I expect Qantas to throw some Jetstar services in, and Virgin Australia to do the same with Tiger Airways, to draw point to point traffic growth away. Melbourne Avalon has been suggested as a parallel, but Tullamarine is not constrained like Kingsford Smith.
Hopefully the encumbent wont be allowed to develop it, so there is some competition, although I doubt if international services will appear in great numbers because Sydney is a key hub for domestic connections, and to a lesser extent to NZ and the South Pacific.

LuganoPirateParticipantThe above of course assumes Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin are all still around by the time it’s built!!!

canuckladParticipantInteresting comparison with Melbourne Avalon libertyscott
Curiosity got the better of me and I checked out their daily flights , you’ll find more Australians at the MCG wearing English cricket tops than traipsing through Melbourne’s 2nd airport.
Seems like there’s another pregnant albino pachyderm spotted on the horizon.

CXDiamondParticipantI think unless Kingsford Smith closes this will become a white elephant. I doubt that 24 hour operation will be enough of a pull to get the major carriers to move.
After all what demand do even Qantas have for domestic operations between 23.00 and 06.00? International operations might move as late as 23.59 and start at 05.00, after all who wants to get off a long haul flight at your destination at 03.00? Will the additional hour be enough of a pull to get the likes of CX and SQ to move?
I rather doubt it.

SergeantMajorParticipantThere is no plan for Kingsford Smith to close in the short term, but a “softly. softly” opening approach will allow the infrastructure to be built to make the new site easier to access.
