I have been travelling for business since 1989 and at the age of 57, I am sitting here in BKK airport headed for PVG and tomorrow to CPH and MAN.
I have 5 days at home before heading Westbound to North America.

I have grown tired of travelling where I used to really enjoy it. This past 10 days between Shanghai and Bangkok have been particularly stressful.
I am treated very well by my employer and travel all long haul in business and if course hold top tier with BA and Star A but it’s wearing thin.

Has anyone else got to the stage where they think enough is enough?

Hi seasonedtraveller – sat in BKK too…

The only part of travelling I dislike is the constant packing, unpacking, sorting of clothes…

I am 54, I work hard (but smartly) but love every single day. If I could have one travel luxury, it would be a butler in charge of case/clothes management.

I feel very privileged to have the life I do… and the total ‘freedom’ to choose directions..

I don’t particularly like the travel, and over the last few years I am more a long distance commuter than a traveller. I do however like the fact I live and work in different countries, it has broadened my mind absolutely no end. The vast majority of my business travel is intra European, so not a great deal to enjoy in the journey other than the bus to the airport. I love London busses. You watch me when I get my bus pass!

Seems as though we were both sitting in BKK at the same time…..small world.
I was in the Silk Lounge, international side, from 0845 – 10.15 – I wonder if we walked past each other?
I was wearing a dayglo yellow ‘Hawkwind’ T-shirt so, not easily missed 🙂

I ve done 90.000 miles so far this year.

Been to LIM, MIA, BOM, HKG, ADD to name a few places.

From my last trip (2 red-eyes in 3 nights) was exhausted, and was sort of wishing not not travel as much. However, I re-charge rather quickly and am doing better now.

Excessive travel is not optimal, but to not travel at all is even worse!

    Cheers,
    Rave

seasonedtraveller – I think many of us pass each other without knowing 🙂

Thursday night will be party night here due to a bizarre sequence of events causing 2 unrelated posters to meet up…

All are invited to floor 24, if you happen to be in BKK…

From age 40 to 60 I did initially heavy travel in the U.S. – the fly to Dallas from Philly Saturday am for a meeting and back that evening
deal. Then monster RTW stuff – a month+ away several times a year
with maybe 7 countries on a trip, plus several back to the U.K for family issues. I was very fortunate to have an employer who allowed all this First Class, but even so, yes I did tire of it eventually. I still enjoy the odd trip, but find I have recently cancelled a couple of planned trips, something I never thought I would do. I enjoyed it tremendously for many years and met some great people along the way, but enough is enough.

I travel and have always travelled a lot and enjoy it. But I’m very tired of just one thing – the behaviour of many travelers in airports: my observation is that they do not act normally, why not I don’t know, others can disagree but it’s just my experience over decades.

I have to agree with you GivingupBA, I enjoy travelling but I do find that some people go into dense mode. Go through fast track security and see the people that just stand at the trays and look surprised at what they have to do and there are all the top tier FF luggage labels.

I’ve often thought this moment would creep up on me… I hit 40 earlier this year and after 17 years of solid travel I think I’ve had enough. All of the early morning starts, hot airports, sore throats, rude airport staff, etc, has got to me, and… I’m now actively trying not to fly as much.

I think, well I know a lot of my travel in the past few years was associated to BA and my status with them. In order the wean myself away from BA I’ve also invested in an easyjet plus card. In all seriousness it is difficult and after 10 years of Exec club gold status (achieved by doing miles runs to LIH in the past couple of years) this will be the last year I chase gold. Also the feeling you’re not valued as a customer has really got to me recently, and… they no longer serve tattigner in the first lounge ;(

I never tire of long haul travel, but I do short haul. In fact i’d rather take the train than the plane most times though travel duration does come into it.

Like Martyn I’d also like someone to pack and unpack my cases, but going a step further I’d also like them to travel with me so they can join the queue at security while I breeze through, carry my case, stow it then retrieve it at the other end.

My reason for preferring long haul is that I’m fortunate to usually travel first, so you breeze through security, get taken to the plane and are generally pampered from start to finish where LH/LX meet you and get you through immigration quickly.

Short haul, business or economy, you’re just part of the scrum and i find that rather tiring even though business if just that bit more comfortable.

How I wish we could go back 30 years when a courtesy card really meant something and if in the premium cabin they really did look after you!

I am also becoming tired of travelling. This year I shall probably fly less than 50 sectors. The last 10 years have been 100+ and the 10 years before that 150+.
I am self employed and I took a look at reward / return for the work that I do for 1 client,.and decided that it was not worth it. Lots of European travel on budget airlines with cramped seating and no real financial return.
I shall make 3 long haul this year, 2 USA 1 China. The long haul has always been business class, and I still enjoy it.

This year I am considering VS PE to / from LAS. Outbound is daytime, so I don’t want to sleep much. Inbound is more or less daytime, leaving LAS at 3:30PM. I know that I shall miss BA Club, and have actually booked BA Club using miles, in case I chicken out of PE. Does anyone have any comments about VS PE? Will it be as bad as I fear? I read negative reviews but these seem to have been written by people who believed the Virgin hype, and had unrealistic expectations.
Any advice or comments gratefully received.

I think how much I enjoy travel depends a lot on where I’m going. I still always enjoy Asia and Australia. Over the last couple of years I’ve made several trips to South America and that has been a varied experience. I loved Chile and Argentina but hated Brazil. Canada has also featured and I haven’t really enjoyed that though I know the country quite well and have holidayed there quite extensively.

In Europe I always enjoy Germany and Poland, detest Spain and Portugal, love Scandinavia and Turkey. It’s a world of contrasts and I’m sure we all have our own favourites and places we would rather avoid.

Short haul is more stressful but also much of that depends on the airport and even terminal of departure and arrival, I think UK airports are among the worst and nothing is improving. I think with lots of short haul it’s also about you encounter security goons far more often when you travel short haul than long haul and particularly in the UK there is still major room for improvement in common courtesy and good manners.

I’ve worked less over the last 18 months than previously and maybe that’s also part of what keeps me interested. The change in lifestyle that went with our move to Cyprus has been amazing and we are getting ready to sell the house in Windsor as we cannot see any prospect of returning to live there and reverting to the lifestyle we had over the years before we moved.
