What’s to stop a terrorist organisation from strapping some sort of small explosive device to a drone then detonating it close to an airliner?

Nothing. But why bother with explosives when they can just fly it into an engine of an aircraft as it takes off and watch it come down on London?

It’s unbelievable that this incident has happened after all the previous near-misses and still we are waiting for action.

What concerns me about this incident, is the apparent attitude of police towards apprehending the culprit.
An expert was interviewed on the radio and he mentioned the concept of idiots or villains. Unbelievably this collision took place above Hounslow/West Drayton. Who in their right mind hasn’t noticed that the airspace above them is to say the least busy with big jets?

Hopefully, it’s a person that falls into the latter category. Somebody who’s dimmer than a black out on the dark side of the moon

More worryingly, could this be a deliberate attempt to see how feasible using a drone to down an aircraft on final approach over London might be…..in other words a dry run ?

I also heard another person recommend that drone owners take out personal liability insurance that will cover them in case of accidents etc……. that also scared me !!!

Mentioned this problem in a thread a couple of years back & response was negligeable – sadly its alright to say “something must be done”, but what ? Terrorists may be incompetent but at both LHR and LCY it would be relatively easy to attack planes on take off (or landing) with a drone and drones have developed significantly in the last couple of years

It s worrying but hard to think what realistically can be done. I figure they are too small to show in radar, and even if they did show up what to do. Shoot it down, divert away from it, maybe a diversion for the hell of it is what the numbskulls flying them want. The Police have a job on their hands, the number of people/property on the approach to LHR is huge, would take the whole met to keep and eye out for it. These things are tiny, can fit in carry on luggage. The only saving grace is the A320 won and the drone owner now has no drone. Terrorism, possible I guess and for that reason good aeronautical minds need to be put on the problem. Realistically though terrorists could easier hit sensitive ground targets a lot easier.

tend to think that this incident could possibly be along the lines of a stupid moronic idiot having a ‘laugh’ whilst on the sauce

imagine it would be difficult to fly an explosive clad drone into a position to down an aircraft (also, how much weight can the things carry)

likewise to get it ingested into the engine

that said the theory cannot be discounted (perhaps a reason for police indifference, they are not on point to investigate)

An announcement just made in Parliament……

Apparently it wasn’t a drone that hit the BA aircraft after all !!
Must of been a UFO or more likely a high soaring bird ?

Edit to add update ….. A plastic bag, presumably not one of those ” Use for Live” ones
