It was expected and it has now been confirmed.

The name of “Germanwings” will be removed from advertising and from booking systems with effect from this autumn.

It will be replaced by Eurowings which is the name Lufthansa will use for its new short- and long-haul budget subsidiary.

For example, if you book LHR-HAM in October you will be presented with the “4U” flight code. But by November that is replaced by “EW.”

The new carrier will open its first base outside Germany in Vienna in the autumn, as we reported on February 19.

Oh dear… Since the word “wings” appears, I believe, in no language other than English, I assume the name is supposed to appeal to the English speaker. No doubt lots of expensive research went into the new name. But the code? EW! My thoughts, precisely…

It’s probably as simple as the word ‘Euro’ suggesting something much more inclusive than the word ‘German’.

Actually, Eurowings was a well-established brand in the German market (they do have a penchant for their english phrases!) – previously an independent operator which gradually came under Lufthansa’s control.

I never understood why they created the Germanwings brand when they had a perfectly good alternative in Eurowings which already had some brand recognition – and was much better suited for positioning as a pan-European rather than a purely German value carrier.

I was clearly being far too subtle!! My concern was the airline code. As in
