LuganoPirateParticipantPS. welcome to the forum Icpteck. You seem to have good knowledge on SPG which I often use though as I book through Booking.com I don’t seem to receive any points for the stay, just extras. I look forward to reading more from you.

JordanDParticipantLP – A Status Challenge (specifically the SPG one) is where they offer you a choice of three months in which you have to stay a specific number of nights (18 for Platinum) and they will award you Platinum Status for rest of this year and the whole of next.
In effect they are saying: “we won’t gift you Gold/Platinum, but if you stay with us in a short period of time – representative of your high stay levels – we will give the status then”.

SenatorParticipantLike @wilson3, I have been a Diamond VIP for many years. Still a great programme, but value has diminished somewhat. Unfortunately, so has many other programmes.
I think the Starwood programme attacks this from the right angle. Requesting some sort of quid pro quo directly is fair to both parties.
The biggest advantage of SPG in my view is the lifetime levels based upon accumulated nights stayed. I believe 500 (edited) nights in total will earn you lifetime Platinum.
Hilton on the other hand, has a great system for status. Allowing both revenue, staying often or the number of nights spent count as qualifier values each type of traveller: from US roadwarrior spending times at Homewood Suites, Hampton Inns or Hilton Garden Inns to the executive that stays at Conrads and Waldorfs and spend quite a bit of money.

MartynSinclairParticipantI am more than happy with the very high standards received from the hotels in the SPG programme around the world, although recently in Germany, standard appear to have slipped slightly, but am very confident will be restored.
According to my SPG programme, 500 nights over a 10 year period will gain Lifetime Platinum status.. am nearly there… 🙂

ANDREWYOUNG1ParticipantAnd remember that you are given Gold SPG when you have the Amex Platinum card – this is for the duration of your Amex membership, not just a year like some of the benefits.

lcpteckParticipantThanks LuganoPirate for the welcome.
You can only earn points (and status benefits) on eligible stays which are booked via spg.com.
You can however do a Best Rate Guarantee (BRG) claim if you find a lower rate elsewhere. If approved, they will match the lower rate and you can choose either 10% off the rate or 2000 starpoints as a reward. You can readup on the T&Cs of the claim on the below website.
I have had much success in this area.

trippleFParticipant@first_class_please: interesting website although hard to navigate, thank you!
There is one interesting Status Match I’d like to share which is due to a recently established partnership: If you are Marriott Platinum you automatically get Silver Status with UAL, giving you one free bag, priority boarding etc. No need to apply!
Since I’m a Lifetime Platinum Member with Marriott this should make me a Lifetime Silver member with United 🙂30 Aug 2014
