AMcWhirterParticipantThe news doesn’t sound good.
I know that a number of you use this airline when travelling within South Africa or when making international connections.
Well it’s just been reported in South Africa that this carrier has been grounded owing to “serious safety concerns.”

SimonS1ParticipantBy the way that is an odd comment in the article that “the regulator is dedicated to upholding the country’s impeccable zero percent accident fatality rate in terms of scheduled operations.”
Does that mean the ‘Helderberg’ and ‘Pretoria’ crashes have been airbrushed from history?

PeterCoultasParticipantAlexMcW: you first link to traveller 24 also had article on the worlds most dangerous cities – quoted Barquisimeto in Venezuela as the worst (no doubt possibly true) but their posted picture of the city is of somewhere in the Yemen ! Traveller24 don’t seem very reliable.

AMcWhirterParticipantThe news today is that SA Express remains grounded. Thousands of passengers have been stranded.
Foreign travellers arriving in South Africa have been unaware of developments.
No indication as to when the airline might resume services.

LuganoPirateParticipantThanks for the heads up Alex.
Just read their certificate has been reinstated. It will be interesting to see how they clear the backlog.

LuganoPirateParticipantI think the accidents referred to above were SAA and not SA Express which while it shares brand is separate though both owned by the state and both dreadfully inefficient.
Though I prefer SA X over Kulula I stopped flying them a year ago, Kulula is much more cramped but if paying for extra legroom and extra baggage they are still at least 50% or more cheaper and much more reliable. The only drawback is I can’t through check baggage with them which I can with SA Express but that’s a small price to pay.

SimonS1ParticipantIndeed LP they were SAA accidents. However the CAA statements refers to the “country’s impeccable zero percent fatality accident rate”. That can’t be correct.
I heard the latest story is that SAA, SAX and Mango are to be merged. I suppose better to have one big mess rather than several small ones, it might fit the economic empowerment agenda better as well as there can only be so many well connected people to fill the jobs.

AMcWhirterParticipantAs Simon and LP have noted, the carrier has now regained its operating licence. Report from ch-aviation.com

LuganoPirateParticipantYou’re right Simon, it’s not correct. The “we’re a new/young country” phrase is rolled out when it suits them, which it does with that statement.
Bearing in mind the limited route network and flights flown the number of incidents SAX has had its astonishingly high. It’s more by luck than anything there have been no fatalities.
Merging the three will solve nothing. It’s one of the most bloated businesses in S. Africa and politics and the unions will keep it that way. It will also keep it from being privatised or taken over.
