    I will soon be attending a conference in Ras Al Khaimah, or RAK as I guess those in the know call it. I would be grateful for any advice on how best to get there as it seems flights into RKT seem somewhat limited. I realise most of the Emirates are somewhat close to Dubai and/or Abu Dhabi, what would be your advice to fly into AUH or DXB and then is there a specific taxi or limo service one would suggest? I will travel Business most likely with either LX or LH as connecting first from Eastern Europe, and I prefer to avoid EK. Other suggestions would be welcome as I have never been to RAK. Thanks in advance.

    Fly into DXB, or you will double your taxi journey length though AUH.

    DXB to RAK will take about 1-2 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

    Have a look at http://www.careem.com for transfers, it is somewhat like Uber, but you can prebook.

    Alternatively, you could consider flying into Sharjah (SHJ), but connections are awkward and the time saving is probably only 15-20 mins.

    BTW, RAK is quiet and has lovely golden sand beaches.

    Thanks FDOS_UK, I thought as much re: DXB, and will definitely look into Careem, sounds good, although a long journey. I will probably go with LX as on my last flight with LH to MCO, I didn’t really sleep well on their new C seats, and the ones on LX have not let me done, also love Zurich airport for ease! Thanks again

    dutchyankee, you might find some of this worth a read

    the actual flight bit here via Doha on Qatar flying into RAK.

    If it was me i would probably fly into DXB and drive it. I used to live in DXB and was used to the driving but to be honest a taxi solution is probably wiser if you are just around the hotel they could also organize the transfer…

    If you consider driving, I’d get an International Driving Permit, since some Emirates require them and some don’t and it does change.

    Thanks Peter, the conference is actually at one of the Hilton’s and then I will have two days R&R at the WA which looks un believable! I noticed QR flies into RAK so might look at that as am ‘still’ gold within BAEC although by end of this year will be demoted. Would love to see the new airport and lounges at DOH during my connection so will have to look into it.

    Definitely worth consideration. Sounds like it will be a great trip – even better with fitting in the R&R at the WA!

    I confirm what FDOS says. It’s an easy drive through some very nice scenery. Flying into Sharjah will limit your flights and as said only save about 20 minutes – depending on traffic.

    I have driven it many times but now would most likely take a taxi or driver. But that’s me as I’m wary of driving in many countries due to their strict laws.

    Enjoy the trip and I look forward to hearing about it and how you got there.

    Just don’t get your 3-letter airport codes mixed up or you could still land in a very sandy country but be over 6000km away from Ras Al Khaimah!

    RAK = Marrakesh
    RKT = Ras Al Khaimah

    I drove to RAK – it is a pretty easy journey. However, the taxi should not be too expensive, a colleague of mine recently paid around 50GBP to go from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, and the journey to RAK is about a similar distance

    Just to advise, I have now booked to fly with Swiss (somewhat worried as really tight connection of 40 minutes in ZRH on the way out) to Dubai, and the hotel will arrange return transport. Going in May, so will be sure to share the experience, it would be my first trip report after so many years on BT Forum. Thanks to everyone for their advice.

    Sounds like a plan!

    Don’t forget your sunscreen (if you conference allows any downtime for leisure activities.)

    Definitely planning three days on the beach!! 🙂 And considering living in Eastern Europe for so many years, sunscreen will be a must!

    Don’t worry about the short connection at ZRH DutchYankee, 40 mins is more than enough. If you’re arriving from a Schengen country had for the E gates, emigration, short train ride and you’re there. There’s also duty free available as well.

    If coming from non Schengen and stay in transit you head straight to E from D I think. I’ve not done it myself but seen the signs. In either case it’ll take you 10 – 15 minutes tops.

    Have a great trip.
