Qatar Airways’ Amsterdam service

    I was notified yesterday that my flight with Qatar Airways from DOH to AMS has been cancelled due to poor passenger numbers only 14 days after its inaugural flight to AMS.
    Though I was offered BA or Finnair flights back to AMS both were no good to me so I opted to fly back one day early. I’m no expert in this field but maybe Qatar may need to reduce its service to AMS to 4 or 5 flights a week to make this service a success?

    Skywards – Did QR actually say that your flight had been cancelled due to poor pax numbers? Given the route is due to launch 16th June, that would place you on the 30th June flight, which is the only flight within a week either side I could see as non-op. Could that be more an aircraft availability issue than pax numbers?

    StephenLondon – That is what I was informed. Like I said I am no expert in the aviation industry maybe @AMcWhirter could answer your aircraft availability issues question? I’ think i am now on the same flights as a friend of mine who also took advantage of Qatars insanely cheap business class prices, I shall surprise him probably in Thais business class lounge.

    As skywards notes, QR is cancelling a number of flights on the route according to its website.

    For example, in July it appears that the Tuesday flight ex-Amsterdam to Doha has been cancelled. Passengers are offered alternatives via MUC or LHR.

    Perhaps QR has found AMS tougher than it first thought ?

    It used to be that AMS was considered a transit airport, KLM had the lion’s share of what is a limited local market (KLM’s traffic is mainly transfer) and so foreign carriers struggled to get business.

    I had thought the situation had changed somewhat seeing as Emirates made a success of its daily flight and quickly found sufficient demand to upgrade to an A380.

    Judging by QR’s experience maybe things haven’t changed too much, after all.

    It’s now confirmed by the Dutch aviation media that QR will fly six times a week, rather than seven, between AMS and DOH.

    Officially the plane type remains the B787. The flight reduction remains in effect until the end of the summer timetable in October.
