Hi Business Travellers, I have been with One world BA for the last 10 years, I manage to get to Gold ” one world emerald ” by spending around 4000£-6000£ a year mostly on QR flights to Asia in business , now my question is : as based in Manchester, how much travel or £££ need to spend to get equivalent status with Sky team and Star Alliance.
    Many Thanks

On Skyteam you have to do 30 flights or amass 40,000 level miles. The 30 flights can be in any class or fare.

    Can’t help with Star Alliance

Another option to consider is trying to get a ‘status match’ in one of the other alliances? I am a gold BAEC but then also through a status match of my BA account have gold in both Star Alliance and Skyteam (albeit I have now actually also just accrued a gold card in Skyteam myself so didn’t actually need the status match for Sky).

An interesting ploy from such airlines as it has actually worked with me – I will actually lose my BAEC this year (with no real disappointment) and switch to Star Alliance due to my experiences using their network on a gold card over the last few months.

The comparison is far from straightforward, but I would argue that Star Alliance and Skyteam have no equivalent to Oneworld Emerald.

I find Skyteam Elite Plus and Star Alliance Gold are more akin to Oneworld Sapphire (admittedly sometimes with a few Emerald benefits – notably more consistent priority than Sapphire offers).

Of course, most of the Star Alliance and Skyteam member airlines have higher tiers, but these are typically only recognised by that airline (and possibly a few of its closest partners).

By way of example, to access the Lufthansa first class lounges as an FF, one needs HON Circle status with Lufthansa or one of the other Miles&More airlines – with a few exceptions, the perk is generally not open to equivalent higher tier FFs in other Star Alliance carriers. Moreover, HON Circle status can only be achieved flying Lufthansa and the other Miles&More airlines – but not other Star Alliance carriers.

So, if you’re looking to join a Star Alliance or Skyteam FF programme equivalent to Oneworld Emerald, it becomes much more important to go with the airline you’re flying predominantly because there’s not the same cross-alliance recognition of the highest tiers.
