On my way to Hurst today, needed a quick food intake and passing J2, M40, made a quick pit stop.

This unlikely service station, off the slip road, turned out to be a really interesting place. The clue was the initial difficulty finding a parking place, it was packed.

Several food outlets offering a total cross section of food, from Chinese to Indian to British roast – it looked incredibly delicious and one of the few times, I wondered about remaining vegetarian.

In the end settled for a couple of salads from M & S. They really do offer a wonderful range of fresh fast food for on the move.

I am sure this service stations standard is not in isolation… which other service stations can readers recommend..?

Coming from the north I used the M40 fairly frequently.

Usually requiring a fuel and occasionally food refill en-route, my preferred stop would be just off J4 (High Wycombe). An Asda for an “economic” fuel fill plus a choice of John Lewis restaurant; Asda café for b/fast; Frankie and Benny; TGI; McDonalds; – all within a minute off M40 J4 (north west exit).

Favourite “Truck Stop” type – just of the M6 J38 at TeBay.
Nearby the on motorway privately run Tebay/Westmorland between J38 & J39 services were good but if you need a feed then head off at J38 (sp Tebay then Orton) for the Truck Stop.

Hollies just off the M6 A5 J12 intersection (Eastward) is also worth a mention.

A great topic to get our teeth into Martyn.

My recommendation to an independent cafe about 20 miles north of Dundee on the A90 heading towards Aberdeen called Peggy Scotts. A truly delicious alternative to bland but trusted brand recognized eateries.

Plus I much prefer to spend my cash in a small business rather than a conglomerate. Oh and its got a crackin bakery inside too.

When I was a young man still living in the UK I was given a book as a Christmas present called “One Mile Away”. It was written by traveling salesman and detailed places to eat and stay all less than one mile from a motorway junction. Sadly he died in the 1980’s so the book was never updated and of course became more and more outdated over time. I will always be grateful to it because it allowed me to discover ‘Bill’s Big Blowout’ a greasy spoon just off the M40 on the way to Silverstone that sells an entire cooked English breakfast in a french stick. God knows the calorie count !

Useful article on “Great” places to just off motorway routes.

Some more than a mile from the motorway. They include NT properties with good café or restaurant facilities eg Chartwell (off M25) and Quarry Bank Mill near MAN and M56
