    Dear Business Traveller Community Members,

I would like to ask for your help and a little bit of your time.
I am currently conducting a survey as part of my final year bachelor degree. My research project aims to understand the role and acceptance of Augmented Reality applications of frequent travellers on mobile devices.

With this I am trying to gain an insight on the general awareness of Augmented Reality Apps, current and possible uses, general views and possible problems faced when using mobile Augmented Reality applications.

This survey is strictly for academic purposes and anonymous. The completion would take about 10 – 15 minutes of your time and any responses would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

I did complete the survey as best as i could, though I’m not sure what an augmented reality app is?

Please put a line break before the link so you can connect directly. Bit of a nuisance to cut and paste.

I also tried to help after first searching Google for the meaning of these apps.
perhaps the OP could explain a little more for those of us who are older than 25 😉

    completed.
Working in IT i have used this several times in the past although in a app for travel capacity when out and about I’m not sure i would use it…just for the time consuming aspect and would have probably done my research before traveling.

LP and SeasonedTraveller, I think in this case an example of Conny’s might be…
Your standing across the road facing a hotel. It has a pool on the roof and an exec floor in the middle and reception on ground. You would take out your phone, launch the app which would utilize the camera. Point it at the hotel. Triggers would bring these objects to life for example you would get 3d tour of the roof top pool or be able to visualize and get information about the exec floor and what requirements there are to gain access.
Equally another example you could just point it at a billboard advert and whatever is being advertized comes ‘live’ on your phone app, maybe showing a video.

    Thanks for that Peter.

I agree I’d have also done my research into which hotel I before travelling. I can’t imagine walking the streets of Sydney or Delhi pointing my phone to see what the hotel can offer.

Another limiting factor I thin is the amount of data you’d need for 3D imaging and so on. Unless I have a local SIM card, something I only buy if I frequent a particular country, the cost could be astronomical.

So all in all, it would be a no no from me.

PS. While I appreciate your reply Peter, it would have been nice to have had some response from Conny.

I see she has read this thread as she did add a line break as I suggested. Some comment and detail as to what the product is, may, as has happened in the past, elicit more responses from other forum members, who are usually helpful in responding to these surveys.

As this may have been Conny’s first post (the 24hr 1 post rule) and the weekend we may still get some more information for us all in the context which Conny may be looking at, hopefully this is so.
AR can be used in many forms so would be interesting to see what might be being developed or thought of in this case.

LP, you bring up valid point about Roaming and local sims. This is still a big issue. Open WiFi points can also be used which could distribute this information for example if you were to go into a museum use your mobile to get connected to the network and you could walk round bringing objects to life.

Its potentially really good but the practicality of it is the other element.

There is an increasing amount of this type of technology used in the military under a number of ‘future soldier’ programs and I will expect to see it become more prevalent in the civilian world as a result. I really can’t see much demand myself but no doubt the ‘first adopters’ will flock to it and they have done for much new technology regardless of its real value (Twitter for example)

Hi all and thank you very much for your super interesting discussions and replies to my survey post. I really appreciate your help and your feedback.
I was indeed not able to reply yesterday as the system had blocked me from doing so. So please don’t take this as disinterest from my side.

So with all your feedback I’m going to try and go through this.

In regards to the Augmented Reality explanation I actually have added a short introduction in the beginning of the survey but if this description was not clear enough then thank you for the feedback. I will review this section again.
And for all those who still may be willing to take some time and help me by completing the survey below is a link to Wikipedia giving a quick introduction to Augmented Reality.

Although I also do my research before getting to a specific location I have to admit that I thought you as seasoned travellers would get more into the situation where a flight is delayed or you may have to extend your stay at the destination. Now in this case I would have assumed that you may come into the situation of standing in, yes lets say Sydney, and searching for a hotel with an Augmented Reality (AR) app. Where a view of the hotel interior could also be a factor influencing the purchase decision, I am also thinking of the option for the app to show you the nearest hotels (by showing direction and distance) based on predefined search criteria such as Star Rating, best online review etc and actually show the room price for that night with the option to book.
I’d never thought I’d be able to follow up on the topic but are you ever in a situation like the one I just described and would you then use this functionality?

Here I understand that the roaming costs will be an issue and I have to admit that I kind of neglected this in my work until now…..
But again would the situation maybe lead you to overlook roaming costs or how else would you get a hotel room for the night in this situation? Or would you maybe get indeed WiFi at a cafe to find the nearest and best hotel? And what do you do in the evenings? Wouldn’t this be a perfect way to get to know the city a little?

I’m sorry I’m asking way to many questions…. 🙂 So don’t feel pushed to answer them all. I just find this to be a great discussion giving me very helpful insights.

    THANK YOU again.
    Conny

Survey completed. It asked if I had ever used an Augmented Reality app, it did not have a box for don’t know. I use google maps 3D quite often to find places and have a mosey round, find it really useful but do not know if that is augmented reality or not.

Hi and thanks for your help!
I think Google would probably not qualify as AR app as it doesn’t provide or supplement what you see through the camera of your mobile phone.
But generally I think Google would have a great advantage with such an app as they already have a great database of information and access to more…. Others would need to build a database or link to one first….
