According to the airline’s website, the A380 which Malaysia Airlines is using for its Paris route, is being replaced by one of its elderly B777-200ERs.

The plane change takes effect next month …on August 4 for the flight leaving Kuala Lumpur for Paris.

Not only is the B777-200ER not popular with our readers (on account of its dated onboard products) but the fact that MAS would seek to remove so much capacity from a key tourist route in the peak season appears to show its perilous financial situation.

Just a few months ago, MAS’ country manager in France was claiming that his airline would keep the A380 on the Paris route throughout the summer season (i.e. until late October) so this move will have come as a surprise.

But with Air France having announced it will axe its Kuala Lumpur service from October 25, one imagines that MAS will remain on the Paris route.

As for the Kuala Lumpur-Paris route, I am sure that many passengers will be disappointed as the equipment change is being made at short notice.

No first class will be available on the B777-200ER, the business class will feature old-style seating and there will be fewer frills in the economy cabin.

The big question now is what MAS intends to do with its six-strong A380 fleet ?

So far no other airline is willing to buy or lease these planes.

Does it need six A380s simply to operate two daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and London ?

Two Malaysia A380s are being offered to the market . As no used A380 has been offered on the used market it will be interesting to see if there are any takers. The sheer cost of changing the cabin to another operators standard is likely to be an issue. I suspect Malaysia may have to accept a considerably loss on these aircraft to move them on .
