Can anyone confirm if it's possible to check-in for a BA long-haul flight from LGW the evening before departure? For example, can I check-in at 4pm even if the flight isn't until 11am the next day?

Sure - unless I'm missing something, you can check in from 24 hours before departure ie 11am the day before. (From that time, "Check in Open" should show up in the top right hand corner when you log on to the BAEC website - assuming you're a member).

or do you mean actually drop off your luggage, as Virgin used to (and may still) let you do?

Early check-in is available at the airport from 16:00 to 22:00 for all flights for the following day.
