skychaiParticipantWell it appears that the move into T5 will be sooner rather than later for Iberia. Iberia plan to relocate from Heathrow T3 to T5 ready for winter 2011, with BA moving some eastern european destinations from T5 to T3 to free up space. Obviously makes a lot of sense for IAG to share the same terminal at Heathrow, just wondering who will join Bucharest and Warsaw in the move out of Five. Any ideas?

BucksnetParticipantIberia should stay in T3. IR, ME, EK and PIA should move to T4 to free up space.
BA needs to move JFK, MIA, ORD and DFW into T3 because the flights are codeshared with AA and should be in the same terminal, as with QF. BA should take over the AA flights to LAX, BOS and RDU and move them into T5. These are not hubs for AA and would be better off flown by BA and will save slots, because AA uses 3 slots a day to fly 757s from BOS. All 6 BOS flights could be replaced with 4 BA 747s.
BCN, GIB, LIS and VIE can move to T5. The 4 class flights from LGW, like BDA and BGI, can move to T5 also.
Another good move would be EI flights from T1 to T5. The domestic gates at T5 are underused and this would allow for easier connections. KF, SK and TK can then move from T3 to T1.

VintageKrugParticipantIn my opinion this is likely to happen in due course, however nothing has yet been announced or confirmed.
The last announcement from BA stated that co-location was under serious consideration, and was certainly in the plan, but that systems compatibility issues were hampering such a move.
Should BAA pull its finger out and complete the transfer shuttle tunnel to connect T5, T3 (and eventually the other terminals) the longer term plan would suggest having a non-BA oneworld hub at T3 makes sense.
It would be simpler to move JAL to T5 in the short term.

HippocampusParticipantIAG is on the record that this is on the cards for the next Winter season.
It will help reduce minimum connection times and inter-terminal transfers for connecting traffic between the two IAG hubs so it makes business sense.

AMcWhirterParticipantBucksnet, you write that “EK should move to T4 to free up space …”
But it’s not as easy as it sounds.
For example, could T4 handle all of EK’s current and planned services ?
A further consideration is the fact that EK has a dedicated A380 boarding gate area in T3. Could such a facility be replicated in T4 ?

It’s not as simple as just swapping quantities of flights. All depends on arrival/departure times and how long an aircraft is planned on the ground for, as well as infrastructure – as LondonCity has alluded to. Stand congestion is THE biggest challenge at LHR.

VintageKrugParticipantThat’s my understanding, Hippo, however the next winter season is just three months off, so that’s quite a big change in a very short timescale.
I was under the impression that this would happen in April 2012 (i.e. for the Summer timetable), in advance of the Olympics.

BucksnetParticipantT5 has got more gates than T2 had and the number of slots has not increased, so the gate situation should be better overall. Of course the aircraft times need to be taken into account as well.
EK is a non-aligned airline and all of those plus Skyteam were planned to move to T4, with the exception of Virgin. MH, IT and CO should move out of T4.

I’d have to slightly disagree with you, although not by very much.
The #1 challenge at Heathrow is that the place is is simply too small for the movements required; of course, stand congestion is a major symptom of this, but LVP or high wind flow restrictions soon show the root cause.
T5 was planned with some use of remote stands as a consequence.

transtraxmanParticipantAn interesting but logical piece of news.
“Bucksnet” would move everybody around the terminals but this comes up against the operational difficulties as stated. However, this will not happen until the new terminal 1/2 (Heathrow East) is finished which will increase the number of gates available to decongest the terminals.
Having joint flying programmes across the Atlantic certainly does not help things(for the passenger) if BA and AA are in different terminals. BA code share flights (all flown by Aer Lingus) to Ireland being in a third terminal (T1) complicates connections further. JAL has been promised access to T5 as one price to stay in “oneworld” to add more bits and pieces.
Two questions – Iberia´s affiliate Vueling, will it also tranfer to T5? By extension, why does BA not codeshare with Vueling, as Iberia does?

BucksnetParticipantAll the moves I have mentioned can happen now, or in the near future and long before Heathrow East.
Most of what I’ve mentioned is in the original plan for terminal moves, and as you state, AA and BA flights to the same destination should be in the same terminal. BA can move other flights to T5 to make space and other airlines can move out of T3 also.
