.. generally I would take a non stop day flight where possible.
any flight eastwards of under 5 hours, I would take a morning flight & not overnight. Equally, going westwards long haul, I would try & set off
on a morning flight.
Where an overnight flight is the only option, a flat bed is a must. I would wake early on my day of travel & set my 'eating habits' as best as I could to the city of my arrival following my forthcoming flight. No late night meal or alcohol on board or prior to the flight.
A sleeping pill on a flat bed usually gives me 6 hours sleep.
To avoid JLC (Jet Lag City) I would stay up as long as possible in my city of arrival, and again take a sleeping pill when I go to bed to 'force a night sleep'.
Napping in the day must be avoided !
Over the counter pills from USA like Unisom contain an anti histamine which can make one very drowsy the next day. Melatonin can work well but I don't always find it effective.

For long haul - don't eat on the plane while travelling and once you land eat at the first meal time there. Seems to trick the body into the right time more quickly.

Irrespective of direction, I never get it when I am flying away ON holiday, but always get it when I have flown back...
