dutchyankeeParticipantI wonder if anyone on the forum has experience of the Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona? I am looking at various hotels in the city, the W has it’s wow appeal, striking building, great beach location, but as at this time of the year the beach and pools will be rather off limits due to weather, I would be happy to move away from the water. The Mandarin looks amazing, pricey but such a good reputation. Anyone have experience there or better suggestion?

Charles-PParticipant‘dutchyankee’ – I stayed there a little while ago and it was excellent.
The roof top restaurant was particularly nice. The concierge (Jose-Luis) is an example of his job done well, having found us a table at a local restaurant we had been told was “booked solid for two weeks”.
We had a ‘Terrace Suite’ which I can also recommend.
Nothing but good news – enjoy the stay.
Charles.

dutchyankeeParticipantHi Charles, many thanks for that. The Hotel looks amazing, and the review sites rave about it, but I trust this forum and am grateful for your advice. I haven’t stayed at many Mandarin properties, but the ones I have stayed at have been flawless, so when I saw there was one in Barcelona, and wanting something special for my other half, it really seemed the right one to go for. I’ll be booking it today. If it isn’t too much to ask, restaurant tips would be very welcome indeed. Thanks again.

Charles-PParticipantI would suggest Lasarte restaurant situated at the Condes de Barcelona hotel.

The roast pigeon I had was superb 🙂

BEYbritParticipantThere is a huge difference in vibe between the two hotels, so it depends what you are after – I don’t believe they have the same target market.
I love the W, personally.
Even when the rain is coming in horizontally off sea in the middle of winter, I love the beachside location. But I grew up as far from the coast as is humanly possible in the UK, so being near the sea is a plus for me (still a novelty, even though I now wake up to a view of the eastern Med every morning).
So, I guess my answer is that you’re not comparing apples with apples. Go for the ambiance that suits you most. The service, comfort and attention to detail at both is great.

BEYbritParticipantIf you’re willing to drop to four-star, and want something in an amazing location (near el Born), then I heartily recommend the Hotel Banys Orientals.
A lovely building, great rooms, very friendly staff, excellent location and a first class Catalonian restaurant “Senyor Pellada”.

dutchyankeeParticipantThanks BEYbrit, I appreciate your comments and fully agree. having stayed at a few W hotels (in NYC on Lexington and in St. Petersburg) the style and vibe are great, but as I am looking for something more luxurious as a weekend getaway with my better half (Valentines Day), and as the seaside features of the W (while no doubt still beautiful even in hellish weather) cant be used I really think the Mandarin will be a great respite for us.

BEYbritParticipantIf it’s a valentines day treat then I think the Mandarin will be lovely.
If your better half declines the trip, then kindly note that I am available as a last-minute stand-in for all types of luxury break (romantic or otherwise, I can usually pull something out of the hat).

dutchyankeeParticipantVery Good to Know BEYbrit. Checking in on 11 Feb out on the 15th, so if there’s a pre-departure agro, I prepaid, so always happy to make new friends! 🙂
