I love trying the hotel toiletries when I’m travelling, but now that I’m in my mid 40s and a recent glasses wearer I’m wondering why they print the writing so small, is it to confuse me?
It seems to be the same in all levels of hotels, I’ve just stayed at the grovenor house in Dubai, had lovely Bvlgary products but couldn’t see the difference between the shampoo and the shower gel when I’m in the shower and not wearing my glasses,
Why is it that the hotels write the name so small.

    Hi Hktbound

I find shower gel works just as well as shampoo. Conditioner is a mystery.

And on the same subject I hate it when even in luxury hotels you arrive to find the miniatures half empty.

Not only shampoo in the shower, Hktbound – restaurant menus are also written by 30 somethings for 30 somethings, with a total disregard for the mature eye!!

I never ever use hotel toiletries. I always bring my own, as I find the hotel’s to be invariably poor [until the very very unlikely day arrives when I check into the London Ritz or Claridges!], even in 4-5 star hotels.

A tip I was given by a concierge some years ago.

Shower Gel and Shampoo are the same thing – only the smell is changed
Conditioner is the above with a thickening agent.

Conditioner is nothing like shampoo. Shampoo breaks the surface tension of the water to allow it to wash away grime and grease in the hair. Shower gel works in a similar way. Conditioner coats the hair shaft, filling in the gaps in the damaged outer cuticle layer to give it a more smooth uniform appearance, this stops the hair matting makes it more manageable. As hair is a dead substance, the older/longer it gets the more damaged it becomes.

Lol. It’s true though. All the fancy claims manufacturers make are mostly a load of rot. However that’s how conditioner works in basic terms. I can elaborate if you like. 😉

Largely in agreement with cheery guy:
Conditioner is the gunk that ladies (mostly) put back on their hair after cleaning it with detergent (i.e shower gel or shampoo). Why bother to clean your hair if you then clog it up again with “conditioner” though the gunk does make long hair more manageable (like the natural stuff that comes out from the hair follicle).

Sadly I am so bald I don’t have much use for conditioner….:-(

I must admit I take pot luck in the shower with shampoo or shower gel, as i cannot read them without glasses. If the bottles were different colours it would be easy. The other annoying thing is bottles with small round lids that are slippery and difficult to open in the shower. I try to remember to open first, but forget, and then try to open a round wet lid. Please make then square or add a friction grip. Final bathroom gripe, tissues in those square boxes, and plastic covers. Great for the fancy one at the top, or a new box, impossible to reach down when box nearly empty. I must be getting old and grumpy.

My bathroom gripe is showers you have to get in to before one gets the temperature right.

Cheap plastic cups in even cheaper plastic bags.

    Cheap tiny soap bars.

Lack of a plug in the sink.

Telephone in the bathroom (anyone actually ever used one?)

Baths that have thin slanted sides that my Bourbon won’t sit on without falling in the sodding bath.

Towels that are not fluffy enough for my oh so delicate skin.

Lights so strong it is like being in a tv studio.

    How’s that for grumpy 🙂

MrMichael, you said “Telephone in the bathroom (anyone actually ever used one?)” I have pondered the question of why they are there for decades no less….. surely they’re there just for safety reasons i.e. in case of accidents/ emergencies? That’s because I cannot believe anyone would actually prefer making ordinary calls from the bathroom rather than from the warm room 5 feet away.

I like the rest of your post by the way – including the cheap cups and cheap tiny soap bars. And I like your “…my Bourbon won’t sit on without falling in the sodding bath” – surely a disaster of biblical proportions.

I have a similar problem but I solve it by making sure that when I get to the hotel, I put the shower gel on the left side of the shower/bath and the shampoo on the right side.
