    1. SkyTeam is now officially the biggest alliance in Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific.

2.Amsterdam to be a non stop service in May. GA-KLM historically significant partnership will be further strengthen as GA will now rely on KLM and Schiphol for connection to Europe, therefore, planned destinations such as Paris, Frankfurt, Rome/Milan will be shelved, at least for now.

    3. As the consequence of GA-KLM stronger partnership, GA is now considering to abandon UAE market; EY agreement might be terminated. Instead codeshare agreement and cooperation with fellow SkyTeam member, Saudia will be establish by end of 2014 to serve ME market.
(If all SkyTeam members terminate their relationship with EY, will EY still hesitant to join SkyTeam?)

    4. London-Gatwick to get a new timing to minimised connection time for flight to and from Australia.

    5. GA will rely on KAL and CAL for US market.

    6. GA will strengthening partnership with all SkyTeam member airlines in China to further strengthen the growing Indonesia-China market. (possibly Australia-China market?)

    7. GA to establish partnership with Aeroflot through intermediary point. No plan to serve Russia.

Hi Vertrek and thank you for this informative post. On point 4 do you know what the new times will be? And if VS does join Skyteam this could be a code-share flight! A Virgin lounge followed by what seems excellent inflight products will surely have an appeal to UK business and leisure travellers to Indonesia and Oz, combined with Flying Club miles. . .

Interesting post Vertrek, good that Skyteam is still growing. You are right in asking whether Skyteam members should take a stronger position against EY or not. If they all do codeshares with them they certainly are under no pressure to join. With EY and VS joining it would make them a really strong global player.

    Thanks for posting, Vertrek.

This important news is somewhat overshadowed by all the breaking stories from the ITB trade show in Berlin today.

But it will be interesting to see what happens with LGW. Will the flight still operate non-stop ? If so I assume the plane type will still be the B777-300ER.

And what about AMS. It’s logical that GA and KL work together to feed onward passengers onto KL’s extensive UK/mainland European network so it would seem that the present A330 will be upgraded to the B777-300ER as the latter has the range to fly non-stop from Jakarta.

I expect all will soon be revealed.

It’s now rumoured that GA will operate its B777-300ER non-stop between Jakarta and Amsterdam with the flight continuing on to LGW.

In other words, the original plan for GA to fly non-stop between Jakarta and LGW has been axed in favour of a one-stop service via Amsterdam.

GA hasn’t issued any information on schedules or when this route would start. It may be that the carrier is trying to secure new slot timings from LGW before going definite on timings.

How disappointing to hear that Alex. I must say though that if your are UK based and your destination is Jakarta, the current schedules are not that attractive – who really wants to do a days work in a city after arriving at 6 ish from a 14 odd hour flight. Better to arrive (on eastbound flights), get to hotel, freshen up/walk/eat, and then go to bed.

But if Garuda does route through AMS and VS does not enter Skyteam (and be a codeshare partner), then this might re-open the door for BA to look at CGK via SIN again.

It is disappointing but it is also logical as I feel operating two non-stop B777-300ERs (one to Amsterdam, the other to LGW) would be adding too much capacity.

It is unclear whether the LGW route will start on time at the end of May.

But I’ve always believed Amsterdam made more sense. GA and KL have worked closely in the past and it makes sense for GA to use KL’s extensive UK/European network.

Yes the route is delayed until September now and they will touch down in Amsterdam. Problem is getting the slots at the times they want apparently.

As mentioned many times by Etihad’s CEO, they have no plans to join an Alliance.
In fact he made a recent speech saying that the days of Alliances had really gone, and it was time to forge new types of agreements and co-operations. Etihad’s 10 year agreement with KLM / AF has not yet enabled the two programs to have reciprocal benefits, that was mentioned a year ago. I cannot see Etihad needing to enter an Alliance, as it is building up its own form, with the investments, Board places, and codeshare agreements with particular geographics, worldwide.

I am a member of Etihad’s FFP, used to be Gold in VS, and have Gold in KLM for many years. It would make sense for VS to join up, what future they without doing so seems bleak.

It would be great if they all did, but more likely VS do soon, surprised they have left it so long already, and only completed this with Delta.

Vertrek – 05/03/2014 09:29 GMT Thanks for the post and the link which is most interesting.

I’ve only flown Garuda once in recent times and found their service to be on a par with MH, not quite up to SQ levels but still very good. Aircraft are new, safety is taken very seriously and the experience was very positive. I will certainly use them again.

As reported in Routesonline.com today 6th March ´14……..

“Garuda Indonesia Re-opens London Gatwick Reservation from Sep 2014”

    http://www.routesonline.com/news/29/breaking-news/240130/garuda-indonesia-re-opens-london-gatwick-reservation-from-sep-2014/

The important points to mention are that this is a non-stop three times weekly Jakarta – London Gatwick service from 8 Sept.2014.
From 2 Oct. the service increases to five times weekly.

Does this mean also that Passengers will be able to book AMS-LGW flights and visa versa?!

Would be very complicated to control load factors for their Long Haul services if they do…?

transtaxman – The fact that GA has reopened bookings for the London Gatwick route is no guarantee it will be a non-stop service.

As routesonline.com notes “Further changes remain highly possible.”

Much depends on whether GA does decide to fly Jakarta-Amsterdam non-stop. If it does then the flight might continue to London.

As for the question of whether GA would have traffic rights between Amsterdam and Gatwick (assuming the Jakarta-Amsterdam flight continues to London) would depend on the relevant air services agreement struck between the countries concerned.

    Alex,
you are right that things can change. However, that is also true with flights already in operation – they do not twig with the public so are cancelled after a few months. Even the launch of this flight has been delayed from 29th May. I do not think, though, that Garuda (or anybody else) would look lightly at its own image by promising something with which it has no intention of complying – especially just after it has joined a prestigious alliance.

    MarcusUK,
In the same article I quoted, it does state…..
“On Jakarta – Abu Dhabi – Amsterdam A330-200 service, Jakarta – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi – Amsterdam sector remains closed for reservation, on/after 29MAY14.”
…which seems to indicate a one-stop service to Amsterdam but separate from the London service which will be non-stop.
