BigDog.ParticipantThe DT has noted some airports which provide a good standard of free Wi-Fi.
Dallas Fort-Worth; Helsinki; Changi; Incheon; Schipol being the top 5.….79 per cent of American airports offer free unlimited Wi-Fi, compared with just 26 per cent in Europe, with about a fifth of European airports still charging for Wi-Fi on a full pay-as-you-go basis.
As Wi-Fi is also being discussed on the Hotel Charges rip-off thread – thought it would be useful to develop a list of Hotel Chains and Airports with free Wi-Fi, also carriers with their charges.

Starwood hotels offer free WIFI to Platinum members. If you’re a Gold member with SPG, free WIFI can be selected as an optional benefit on check-in.

IanFromHKGParticipantAs ever, the DT misses some detail. LHR provides 45 free minutes to Joe Public. The 90 free minutes is available to members of Heathrow Rewards, which is also free but requires registration

Not a chain as far as I know, but just to illustrate that if cheap, comfortable hotels offer free wi-fi in your room…

I have a Virgin UK mobile phone number. If I top up with £10 I get 3gB of data for the month which I can then use wherever I am in the UK.

FCTravellerParticipantFrom one CANUCKLAD to another. I’m hoping this is your problem. If BT is opening its front page it may be because you have previously connected to the BT Wi-Fi (this could have been anywhere, not just LHR) and your smartphone remembers that and connects automatically when it detects it. Go to your Wi-Fi settings, long press the offending BT Wi-Fi and you will be presented with an option to “Forget Network”. Both Android and iOS have similar functions. Also make sure your Wi-Fi settings are not configured to “Connect to open Wi-Fi automatically” or make sure to select “Ask to join networks”. If you remove your phone’s ability to connect to the BT Wi-Fi, it won’t be able to open its front page. Hope this resolves your problem.
