The DT has noted some airports which provide a good standard of free Wi-Fi.
Dallas Fort-Worth; Helsinki; Changi; Incheon; Schipol being the top 5.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travel-advice/10841122/Airports-with-free-Wi-Fi-the-worlds-best.html

….79 per cent of American airports offer free unlimited Wi-Fi, compared with just 26 per cent in Europe, with about a fifth of European airports still charging for Wi-Fi on a full pay-as-you-go basis.

As Wi-Fi is also being discussed on the Hotel Charges rip-off thread – thought it would be useful to develop a list of Hotel Chains and Airports with free Wi-Fi, also carriers with their charges.

    HOTEL CHAINS
    Wingate by Wyndham
IHG with Priority Club Member (Free to Join)
    Hyatt
Fairmont with Presidents Club (Free to Join)
Starwood hotels offer free WIFI to Platinum members. If you’re a Gold member with SPG, free WIFI can be selected as an optional benefit on check-in.
    Hamptons
Hilton and DoubleTree by Hilton hotels, wi-fi is free to all guests only in main public areas.
    UK Marriotts as above
Premier Inn no charge for only the first 30 minutes.

    AIRLINES
    JetBlue,
    Norwegian,
    Turkish Airlines,
    Air China
    Hong Kong Airlines.

Air France, KLM, All Nippon, Cebu Pacific, Icelandair, Jet Blue, WestJet, Nok Air, JAL, Transaero, Vueling and Aeroflot have announced that they’ll soon be implementing WiFi in their cabins into 2014 and 2015

EDI now has free Wifi, and brilliantly automatically connects everytime you enter the terminal after you’ve done the initial login malarky.

As ever, the DT misses some detail. LHR provides 45 free minutes to Joe Public. The 90 free minutes is available to members of Heathrow Rewards, which is also free but requires registration

There is free wifi at HKG

Mandarin Oriental provided you book rooms through their website and create a “profile”. NH hotels (not just in Spain) are also free but you have to get a new access code each day from reception.

Hotel Vice-Rei in Porto for about €30 a night. Never again Hilton!

Not a chain as far as I know, but just to illustrate that if cheap, comfortable hotels offer free wi-fi in your room…

MXP free for 40 minutes I think with a fairly simple registration.
Ditto for LCY but no limit as far as I know. Mind you, never been there long enough to find out!

Just posted this in “Hotel Ripoff” but probably equally relevant here.

I have a Virgin UK mobile phone number. If I top up with £10 I get 3gB of data for the month which I can then use wherever I am in the UK.

However, does anyone know how to bypass the incredibly annoying BT Wifi Hotspot £5 for an hour front page that is now blocking access to not only my own data plan but any free Wifi spots I log into…. BT deny responsibility for the page?

From one CANUCKLAD to another. I’m hoping this is your problem. If BT is opening its front page it may be because you have previously connected to the BT Wi-Fi (this could have been anywhere, not just LHR) and your smartphone remembers that and connects automatically when it detects it. Go to your Wi-Fi settings, long press the offending BT Wi-Fi and you will be presented with an option to “Forget Network”. Both Android and iOS have similar functions. Also make sure your Wi-Fi settings are not configured to “Connect to open Wi-Fi automatically” or make sure to select “Ask to join networks”. If you remove your phone’s ability to connect to the BT Wi-Fi, it won’t be able to open its front page. Hope this resolves your problem.

Cheers for the advice FCTraveller, will try it out later and let you know how I got on.
